Thing 19

My Web 2.0 award goes to Flickr... While working in the lab I see many patrons of all ages enjoy the services Flickr has to offer. Many parents get emails for their kids in college with a link to Flickr so they can see photos of what they are doing or of places they have been to. Just seeing the smiles on their faces shows the impact that Flickr has brought to the internet.

This was such a wonderful training. I really learned so much wonderful tools and information from this training. It was a lot of hard work and dedication, but I finally completed my training. It was just a miracle to find time to sit here in the computer lab and work on my training. But I hope there will be more fun and interesting trainings in the future.

Thing 29

I can say I finally made it!! Yes....only one more blog to finish and I have completed all 30 things. I would have to say that I have truly learned so much from this training and had fun completeing it. The only difficulties that I had faced during this trainig was trying to find time in the computer lab to sit here and work on my Web 2.0!!

Pro's

  • Using image generators.
  • Learning how to upload videos to a blogger account.
  • And in general learning about new and interesting sites

Con's

  • Dead links
  • Blocks by the Internet filtering

I would have to say that Web 2.0 was a really wonderful training, because it had exposed me to new and interesting websites.

In general, I would have to say that podcasting is great. It is definitely something cool that you can download to your MP3 player. I am sure that there are several search engine available to locate podcasts. But, I was not able to access two out of the three sites due the the filtering on the staff computers.

The only one that I could access was Yahoo...and this website works just like a regular search enging. Also, Yahoo did not have any overwhelming features.

Thing 18

It is just so amazing to seen how much technology has changed over the years. We use to have to have to go to the library and spend hours finding our information by searching tons and tons of books. Well...now you can find almost anything on the Internet.
I thought that Technorati was a very interesting site. I like the way it tags each of the articles by subject. By it being tag it makes it much easier for people to find it when they do a search.

What are tags?

Tags are one-word descriptors that you can assign to your bookmarks on del.icio.us. They're a little bit like keywords but non-hierarchical. You can assign as many tags to a bookmark as you like and easily rename or delete them later. Tagging can be a lot easier and more flexible than fitting your information into preconceived categories or folders.

Thing 17

What is del.icio.us?

del.icio.us is a collection of favorites - yours and everyone else's.

You can use del.icio.us to:

  • Keep links to your favorite articles, blogs, music, reviews, recipes, and more, and access them from any computer on the web.
  • Share favorites with friends, family, coworkers, and the del.icio.us community.
Discover new things. Everything on del.icio.us is someone's favorite -- they've already done the work of finding it. So del.icio.us is full of bookmarks about technology, entertainment, useful information, and more. Explore and enjoy.
  • del.icio.us is a social bookmarking website -- the primary use of del.icio.us is to store your bookmarks online, which allows you to access the same bookmarks from any computer and add bookmarks from anywhere, too. On del.icio.us, you can use tags to organize and remember your bookmarks, which is a much more flexible system than folders.
  • You can also use del.icio.us to see the interesting links that your friends and other people bookmark, and share links with them in return. You can even browse and search del.icio.us to discover the cool and useful bookmarks that everyone else has saved -- which is made easy with tags.

What can I use del.icio.us for?

del.icio.us is an open-ended system, so you decide how you want to use it.

Here are examples of things you can do with saving bookmarks on del.icio.us:

  • Research - Writing an article? Researching an industry? Slaving away on your dissertation? Use del.icio.us to keep track of all the source materials and commentary that you find online.
  • Wishlist - Go to any commerce site, find what you like, save it to del.icio.us and tag it as wishlist. Then you can tell people to check out your wishlist bookmarks by giving them a link to http://del.icio.us/username/wishlist .
  • Podcast - Want to hear some great podcasts? Visit the mp3+podcast tag combination and start listening. Are you a podcaster? Start posting your mp3 files to del.icio.us and we will create an RSS feed for you.
  • Vacation - Planning a trip? Save links to hotels, activities, and transportation and use tags like "travel", "vacation", and "to-visit". Collaborate with friends and family by using the "for:username" tag.
  • Linklog - Save bookmarks to interesting websites and add a bit of commentary to create a lightweight linklog. Then, use linkrolls or the daily blog posting feature to include your del.icio.us bookmarks on your blog or website.
  • Cookbook - Whenever you find a great recipe on a website, save it to del.icio.us. Tag it with the recipe's ingredients or style of cooking, and then when you're wondering what to make for dinner, you can use your saved bookmarks to help you remember the perfect recipe.
  • Collaboration - Friends, coworkers, and other groups can use a shared account, special tag, or their del.icio.us networks to collect and organize bookmarks that are relevant -- and useful -- to the entire group.

What is social bookmarking?

del.icio.us is a social bookmarking website, which means it is designed to allow you to store and share bookmarks on the web, instead of inside your browser. This has several advantages.First, you can get to your bookmarks from anywhere, no matter whether you're at home, at work, in a library, or on a friend's computer.

Second, you can share your bookmarks publicly, so your friends, coworkers, and other people can view them for reference, amusement, collaboration, or anything else. (Note that you can also mark bookmarks on del.icio.us as private -- only viewable by you -- if you like.)

Third, you can find other people on del.icio.us who have interesting bookmarks and add their links to your own collection. Everyone on del.icio.us chooses to save their bookmarks for a reason. You have access to the links that everyone wants to remember. You can see whether two people have chosen to remember a link, or whether it was useful enough for a thousand people to remember -- which may help you find things that are useful for you, too.

Thing 15

I really think that the Virginia Beach Public Library should consider social networking sites to connect with its teens. I have notice here in the computer lab here at Central, that we have more and more teenagers that are using myspace.

Thing 13

I think that Wikis are very interesting place to record information, however, in order for it to be useful here in the library setting, there would have to be a person, in which all they do is monitor what information is being posted to make sure that the information is valid and accurate.

Thing 12

Since the City of Virginia Beach has introduced AskVBPL, the library has further indoctrinated itself into the Web 2.0 realm.
While there may be several drawbacks, in time the benefits of virtual referencing with distinquish our libraries and it will provide better customer service to our patrons.

Thing 11

I think that instant messaging is a great idea. With more and more information being available on the Internet, it only makes sense for the various libraries to adapter to the meet the needs of its customers.

Thing 10

Which method of finding feeds did you find easiest to use?

I just did a search through google reader to find my favorite websites and added them.

Which Search tool was the easiest for you?

I looked at the other sites for the RSS Feeds, but I personally find that google readers was much easier to use then the other tools.

Which was more confusing?

When I was looking at the other sites to add RSS feeds, I found that Topix.net was not very user friendly and I had a hard time trying to figure out what I had to do.

And, when I tried to access feedster.com their website must of been experiencing problems at the time.

What kind of useful feeds did you find in your travels?

I found some feeds that were really interesting to me:

  • The Camera May Not Lie, but the Software Does
  • Judge Greenlights Suit Against Microsoft Over Vista OS
  • Transfer Tickets: The Best and Worst in VHS-to-DVD Converters
  • Bill Gates: Here, Kid, Have a Free Microsoft Developer Kit

Or what kind of unusual ones did you find?

I did not find any ususual ones yet!!! But I did find some really interesting ones:

  • Microsoft to launch beta of Internet Explorer 8
  • Dealing with workplace conflict
  • Nintendo's Wii makes an Oscar Appearance
  • Digital downloads will be Blu-ray's downfall

What other tools or ways did you find to locate newsfeeds?

I basically used google reader for my RSS Feeds, I clicked on add a subscription, and then I did a search for one of my favorite websites, or magazines.
